Finally! Another part of this series! Yeah, I've been working on this, but it's been delayed by prompt swap and working in conjunction with r7 to do some of his chapters and some of my chapters. Chapter 8 will be a collaborative effort between the two of us, and it may come out soon.

And without further ado... Let the reading commence! Enyoy and comment if you'd like. I love to see comments from you guys.

Etho POV

“Paul?” I asked through his bedroom door. “You said you wanted to train me, Nebris, and BTC more with our magic this afternoon. Are you ready?” I heard a few bumps from the other side of the door, and after a minute Paul opened the door, eyes red.

“Are you sure you’re okay Paul? We can do this tomorrow or something if you don’t want to do it right now.”

“No it’s fine. Let’s go. I have somewhere in mind. It’ll help with bringing out your element.”

“Element?”

“Never mind. Go get Nebris and BTC and meet me by the entrance.”

--

“Alright. Since we’re here, we’ve really got to do this. We are in a do or die situation with the Council now, and we need to be at the top of our game. First of all, what are your magical strengths?” I had no answer for him, but Nebris and BTC spoke up.

“Mind magic and psychic and darkness element,” Nebris announced, earning him a nod of understanding from Paul.

“Death magic and steel, fire and dark elements.” Paul raised an eyebrow once he finished.

“Three elements? That is quite rare. Good to know. Now Etho, do you have any idea what we are talking about?” I shook my head.

“Well each mage has their individual strengths and capabilities that suit their character and personality. For example, one of the strongest mages ever to exist had little of his own power, but had the ability to draw upon other’s life force to power himself to peak prowess. His life-long companion was a mage who had the ability to share her power without growing weak, so they became the most dangerous mages in history because of his boosted fire attacks and her supportive powers. See what I’m getting at?”

“Vaguely. So, you’re saying that I have an individual skill that is unique to me?”

“Yes. But now that I think about it, Nebris, can you teleport without a long chant?”

“Nope. It takes like five minutes to actually finish an incantation like that.”

“I know. They really aren’t helpful in the midst of a battle,” BTC agreed.

“Then I know what your skill is Etho. Teleportation,” Paul announced to me, which confused me.

“I don’t understand. How do you know?”

“Remember when Nebris shot an arrow at Vechs at the assassin base? You seemed to slow down time for about ten seconds for you, but only a fraction of a second actually went by, and then you were suddenly in front of Vechs to block the arrow. You slowed time to a near halt for a few seconds, and then warped to where you needed to be, without the use of an incantation. You see?”

“Oh yeah! I did. So I can teleport?”

“It might drain you quite a bit like it did after the battle if you use it just willy-nilly, but I can help you train and have more magical stamina for longer warps and make you able to slow time for longer.”
“Cool. But what about the element thing you were talking about? Do you know what mine is?”

“Well, the most basic spell is a fire spell, but when you showed me yours, it seemed very weak and not well maintained. That implies you have an elemental prowess for either water or wind. And teleportation implies wind, so that is almost certainly one of them. But you might have a second element, so let’s test out some basic spells for each element.” He handed me a list of about ten paragraphs. A list of incantations.

“Okay. Let’s do it. Gale-force wind, come forth! Wind blade!” A large rift appeared in the air in front of me, and I put my hand into the vacuum it created. It felt like the lightest, but most powerful blade I had ever possessed, with a mind of its own almost. I slashed it downward and it created a large rut in the ground where it made contact.

“Wind is definitely your most powerful,” Paul said. I nodded in agreement. I loved the feelings of the wildness and free will of the wind, like it was alive. I tried a few more to much less exciting results.

“Last one Paul. Spire of ice, come forth! Icicle Spear!” There was a rumbling and a large spike of crystal clear ice shot up from the ground.

“Well, I’d say that ice is probably your second element. Would you agree?” Paul asked this, but I already felt something going on in my mind. A new thought, a growing connection to the sphere of magical power that I had only felt weakly before. I saw something new and felt like I needed to try it.

“Dark clouds, cold wind, come forth and ravage this land. Blizzard!” I shouted over the renewed strength of the wind and ice pellets that were beginning to fall.

“Etho! Geez, warn us next time!” Nebris shouted at me. I just smiled back at him, seeing him now covered in freezing rain and bits of snow, along with Paul and BTC. He shot me a look that made it look like I would be paying for this, but I didn’t care. I broke the connection and the storm died down.

“That was quite the display Etho. Would you like to battle anyone as practice?” I nodded and motioned to Nebris to stand across the small beachfront from me. The sand was now slick from the storm I had summoned, but I didn’t care. I felt like I had better traction on ice than anywhere else.

“You ready for this Nebsy?” I asked tauntingly. He snarled in my direction, but I could see his giddy smile of anticipation for our battle. I felt like I could actually combat him this time. I wouldn’t let myself be overpowered by him. I knelt down and picked up a large spike of ice and molded it between my fingers into a reasonable dirk. I spun it a few times before deciding it was a good fit and grasped it tightly. Nebris took out his rapier and his long silky ribbons once more. This time I saw a slight purple tint to it, revealing to me that his weapon had some sort of magical properties.

“Ready yourselves! Three, two, one… GO!” Paul shouted to begin out fight. Nebris charged me and I stood awaiting his attack. At the last moment, I moved my ice spike up to block his sword, but it did more than that. It made contact at a single point on his blade and it began to freeze over. After dodging one more thrust, I saw an opening.

“Gale-force wind, come forth! Wind blade! Ice thick and strong as steel; pour your strength into my blade. Polar Vortex!” The blade of wind I had summoned reacted to the icy cold powder that suddenly surrounded it and became much more visible and physically there than it had been before.

“His elements work together in near perfect harmony… Amazing!” Paul nearly whispered. He seemed surprised at my handling of power so quickly. But it felt so natural to be fighting like this. I grabbed the blade and swept it upward, spraying shards of ice at Nebris. He held up his blade to block the strike, but when the spray hit it with its full force, the blade shattered. The ice had weakened the steel in his blade and my attack was something he was unprepared for.

“Who’s winning now?” I called to him, but he just dropped what was now just a hand guard to the sand and drew a pair of daggers with violet hilts. He threw one in my direction, and I deflected it with ease. But Nebris had a plan. He used his magic to move the dagger back around to my unprotected back. It struck me hard and drove me to my knees. I cried out in pain and Nebris rushed in to finish the fight. But I raised my blade and created a vortex of cold air that blasted him off of his feet and lifted him ten feet into the air, making him to land on his back hard, driving the air out of him. I took the pain and walked over to him and pulled out his dagger. I put it down on the sand and whispered to him, “I’ll be leading tonight.” All he could do was nod in response. And I walked from the battle arena to the water’s edge, where I hardened the water’s surface to be thick enough for me to walk on and I made my way back to the mainland without looking back to my companions. I just needed to heal my back, and I needed some potions from Doc for that. I held out long enough to get to his room, which he had set up to one side of Paul’s brewery room. But when he saw my injury, I had to cry out in pain, something I couldn’t do in front of Nebs. I would have never heard the end of it if I did. Doc fixed me up well enough to be able to go about the rest of my day with a regeneration potion on hand just in case. I thanked him and made my way to Nebris’ room, since I had heard him, Paul and BTC return about an hour ago. It was late afternoon now, so I felt like we could enjoy each other’s company for a few hours before starting the fun.
